Parent/ Caregiver/ Family Coaching
“You can’t go back and change the beginning but you can start where you are and change the ending.” – C.S. Lewis
What is Parent/ Caregiver/ Family Coaching?
We know how hard it is to put recommendations and suggestions into action! It’s not just the children that need strategies, the parents/caregivers/families do too. Sometimes life can get pretty hard!
Parent/Caregiver/Family coaching involves the therapist and the parent(s)/caregiver(s)/families who develop a partnership to create goals that align with the support plan for their child.
We assist parents/caregivers/families as they hone their skills of connecting, setting boundaries, regulating emotions and modeling. We are there to help navigate barriers within the child/parent/caregiver/family relationship and to be responsive to their child’s needs which in turn builds resiliency.
We can help families to establish healthy routines, boundaries and limitations which include healthy sleep hygiene, physical activity, eating and screen time. All important elements to building a healthy child so they can be productive throughout their day.
We help manage and create a plan for behavioural outbursts and difficulties managing impulse control.
More specifically, our mental health team can provide guidance through life transitions such as separation, divorce or co-caregiving struggles as well as grief/loss, traumatic life events and family medical issues.
Parent/Caregiver/Family coaching sessions involve getting to know the family’s approaches and the child, as well as, their needs and struggles.
What to Expect from Parent/Caregiver/Family Coaching
A collaborative and supportive partnership with a trained therapist where you will leave the sessions with tangible skills, strategies and practices.
You will have regular check-ins to review progress. Virtual or in-person sessions are available to complete these check-in.
How Does Parent/Caregiver/Family Coaching Work?
Parent/Caregiver/Family coaching sessions will work in tandem with a child’s individual therapy sessions. A consultation/Initial visit will need to be completed for the child, and parent/caregiver/family coaching can be scheduled to help support the parent/caregiver in implementing strategies for both the child and the family.
Who is Parent/Caregiver/Family Coaching for?
Parent/Caregiver(s)/Families who are feeling ineffective, stuck, or wanting to connect to their children in a more attuned, conscious manner. Parent/Caregiver/Family coaching can be requested by the parent/caregiver or may be recommended by your therapist. Coaching can be done with your Occupational Therapist or Social Worker or Behaviour Coach.
Parent/Caregiver/Family Coaching sessions can be done after a consultation has been completed, in order to address the current concerns and needs of the child and can be done virtually or in-person.

Coaching Session (OT, SLP, SW)
Intake
It begins with a conversation. You may know what services you are looking for, or may want to talk that through with someone who can guide you. Coming into our clinic begins with a call to our Administration staff to schedule your first appointment with a therapist. This first appointment may be a consultation where we collect relevant history and the details related to your most pressing concerns. The first appointment may also involve an assessment, where we are using standardized testing to inform next steps and recommendations.
Support Plan Development
Following the consultation/assessment appointment, the therapist will use the information gathered, and with the caregiver’s input, build a mutually agreed upon support plan. This may include goals for individual therapy sessions, further additional assessments, and guiding recommendations.
Therapy Sessions
Therapy sessions include the therapist, the child and the caregiver. Caregivers are encouraged to join in their child’s therapy sessions to observe the progress their child has made, to understand the activities and the desired outcome, and to learn how what happens in the therapy session can translate to the home setting. These sessions are also important in building rapport between your child, yourself and the therapist, as this is how we get to know you better and shape our sessions to meet your child’s individual needs.
Review and Next Steps
Once several therapy sessions have taken place, and the child has met their goals as laid out in their support plan, your therapist will meet with you to discuss next steps. This time of reassessment is an opportunity to celebrate the gains that have happened through therapy and determine what next steps are recommended to take place. This may include adjusting the support plan and carrying on with therapy sessions, or perhaps referring to an additional discipline to assist in reaching some new objectives, or celebrating the end of therapy sessions and your child reaching their goals!
Our Process
Here at LSCTS, our process can be boiled down to four essential steps. Our process ensures that our team follows best practices for each child and their families, every single time. Although we follow a standard process, the help and care that your child receives will be as unique as they are.
