What are Feeding skills?
Feeding skills are required to eat and nourish our bodies. While it may seem simple, many skills are required to eat:
- Oral-motor skills coordinate the tongue, lip and jaw so we can chew, suck and swallow food
- Gross or large motor skills allow us to sit up and maintain this position so we can eat
- Fine or small motor skills so we can hold food and use utensils
- Sensory skills so we can tolerate different flavours, textures, smells, touch and other sensory input from the food itself and the environment in which we are eating.
If a child is having difficulty in one of the areas above, eating food or trying new foods can be extremely difficult.
Therapy for Feeding Skills can help children of all ages who:
- Have difficulty chewing, drinking or swallowing food.
- Have difficulty sitting up and maintaining this position to eat
- Have difficulty manipulating small objects and tools
- High or low registration of sensory input such as touch, sight, smell and taste.
Results you can expect after therapy focusing on Feeding skills:
- Improved ability to chew food, swallow food or drink and sucking
- Improved ability to be upright and maintain a proper sitting position while eating
- Improved ability to manipulate food with their hands and the use of utensils
- Improved sensory registration of touch, sight, smell and taste as it relates to food
