What are Self-Regulation skills?
Self-Regulation is the ability to understand, be aware and manage your own behaviour and reactions. Children begin to develop self-regulation skills while they are babies, with the most formative years being the toddler and preschool years, and they continue to develop these skills into adolescents and adulthood.
Although all children will struggle to self-regulate from time to time, it has been observed that children who typically feel things strongly and intensely find it harder to self-regulate. As well, if the child’s skills are underdeveloped, (e.g. speech or motor skills) they could become deregulated due to frustration.
Different things and circumstances can affect your child’s ability to self-regulate. Being tired, being ill, and changes to routine can all affect your child’s ability to regulate their reactions and behaviour. Some children may have better regulation in one environment than another due to the demands placed upon them in each environment.
When left with no strategies, regulation can become a bigger concern and can influence social interactions with their peers.
Therapy for Self-Regulation skills can help children of all ages with:
- Transitions
- Frequent meltdowns
- Social challenges- getting along, communicating and playing well with others
- Completing daily routines
Results you can expect after therapy focusing on Self-Regulation skills:
A child who has strategies and can manage their behaviour and reactions will be better learners, more flexible, will be able to behave well in different situations, get along with others and become independent with daily routines.
Self-Regulation skills (Occupational Therapy) and Emotional Regulation skills (Mental Health) can often look similar in younger children. Our therapists can work collaboratively together to find the best support plan for your child, and determine the best course of therapy or collaborative therapy to help your child be successful.
