Social Workers
Social Workers are mental health therapists that help children through talk and play-based therapy to figure out the sources of stress or problems, help them strengthen their coping skills and find effective solutions. They often look at family and community connections and how those connections affect thoughts, feelings and actions.
The Social Workers that work with LSCTS are registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and have a Master’s Degree in Social Work. Social Workers must participate in continued professional learning and skills development to fulfill the requirements of the college.
Social Workers can serve in a variety of workplace settings, including hospitals, community centres, schools, social service agencies and private practice, such as LSCTS.
Social Workers are considered eclectic therapists, implementing a variety of skills, knowledge, interventions and strategies in order to assist their clients and their families.
Social Worker services are offered at LSCTS.
Psychotherapists
Psychotherapists are mental health therapists that help people, primarily through talk-based therapy, to improve and maintain their mental health and well-being. They do this by working on bringing positive changes to a person’s thinking, feeling, behaviour and social functioning.
The Psychotherapists that work with LSCTS are registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario and have a Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology.
Psychotherapists can work in a wide range of settings, including private practice, hospitals, clinics, care facilities, rehabilitation centres/programs, and universities.
Psychotherapists, like all other mental health therapists, are competent to use a treatment approach or modality, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, but will implement a variety of techniques with their clients.
Psychotherapy services are offered at LSCTS.
Psychologists
Psychologists and Psychological Associates are trained to assess, diagnose and treat mental health problems and disorders. They hold a masters or doctoral degree in psychology and usually within a specific specialty area or areas. Psychologists can help children who present with cognitive, emotional and behavioural challenges. A psychologist cannot prescribe medications.
Here at LSCTS, our Psychologists work in an Assessment and Diagnostic capacity only. They can assess for Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)/Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Mental Health concerns (anxiety, depression etc), Social/Emotional/Behavioural concerns, memory testing and more.
Psychology services are not covered by OHIP, but Psychology is often covered under private insurance benefit policies. See your policy coverage for more information.
Psychology services are offered at LSCTS.
Psychiatrists
Psychiatrists are medical doctors that have completed specialized schooling in diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions, which include counselling and the prescribing and management of medication.
Psychiatrists can work in many different environments, including hospitals and private practice. Since Psychiatrists are physicians, their service fees are covered by provincial and territorial health plans, such as OHIP. Your family doctor will be able to refer you to see a psychiatrist.
Psychiatric services are not offered at LSCTS.
