AWhat is an ASD Diagnostic Assessment?
For children ages 2-18
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is tested and diagnosed using a variety of assessment tools and by observing a combination of certain behaviours.
Some of the assessment tools can include the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). The observed behaviours can include, but are not limited to, how your child communicates, their level of social skills, repetitive behaviors and developmental disabilities.
This assessment can be done as a stand alone assessment if a previous IQ and Adaptive Assessment were completed or can be added to a developmental assessment (IQ and Adaptive Behaviour).
How does the Assessment work?
Each of the in-clinic portions last 2-3 hours at the office. We recommend you bring a small snack and water bottle for your child.
This also includes a standardized online questionnaire and a virtual meeting with the Psychologist.
Following this, a report of the findings and recommendations will be shared with the legal guardian/client. Copies of the report can be shared with third parties with consent, as requested.
What to do in order to prepare for the Assessment:
It is recommended to talk to your child in order to help them understand and prepare for the assessment.
Here is one way to go about explaining the assessment:
“This is a time to better understand how you learn, how you best interact with others, and how to work on feelings and behaviours that sometimes get in the way of being our best selves. Your job is just to do your best with [Psychologist’s Name], and if something is tricky, let [Psychologist’s Name] know so you can work together to figure out why!”
By using your child’s language (“we want to help you so listening/math/karate isn’t so boring”; “we want to work to help you with your big emotions”) you affirm for them that their problem is important and we want to help them with it.
Not quite sure what assessment is appropriate for your child or you have multiple concerns for your child? We can schedule you a Consultation with our Psychologist to discuss the current concerns and look at appropriate assessments and resources for your child.
