What is a Mental Health Assessment?
For children ages 2-12
This assessment is for children with mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, or disruptive behaviours that may be masking a mental health concern. The assessment will consider complex relationships of development, mental health, challenges to forming attachment, the role of physical health (such as sleep), in addition to cognitive and adaptive skills.
Caregivers may request an assessment due to concern for how a child is coping socially, emotionally, behaviourally, or following a stressful event.
The structure of the assessment will be discussed with the caregiver, based on the age and needs of the child.
How does the Assessment work?
Each of the in-clinic portions last 2-3 hours at the office. We recommend you bring a small snack and water bottle for your child.
This is followed by:
- An online standardized questionnaire(s) to be completed by the caregiver
- A 1-1.5 hour virtual clinical meeting with the Psychologist and caregiver/client
Following the gathering of additional clinical information and the clinical meeting, a report of the findings and recommendations will be shared with the legal guardian/client. Copies of the report can be shared with third parties with consent, as requested.
What to do in order to prepare for the Assessment:
It is recommended to talk to your child in order to help them understand and prepare for the assessment.
Here is one way to go about explaining the assessment:
“This is a time to better understand how you learn, how you best interact with others, and how to work on feelings and behaviours that sometimes get in the way of being our best selves. Your job is just to do your best with [Psychologist’s Name], and if something is tricky, let [Psychologist’s Name] know so you can work together to figure out why!”
By using your child’s language (“we want to help you so listening/math/karate isn’t so boring”; “we want to work to help you with your big emotions”) you affirm for them that their problem is important and we want to help them with it.
Not quite sure what assessment is appropriate for your child or you have multiple concerns for your child? We can schedule you a Consultation with our Psychologist to discuss the current concerns and look at appropriate assessments and resources for your child.
