What are Fine Motor/Handwriting skills?
Fine motor skills encompass everything we do with our hands and fingers. For a child, these hand and finger movements are important for them to be successful at school and become independent with self-care skills.
Sometimes children have issues with muscle strength in their hands and fingers; other times it may be difficulties with making quick and precise movements or planning out the movement in their brains. An Occupational Therapist can assess which areas of fine motor skills are impacting your child.
Therapy for Fine Motor/Handwriting skills can help children of all ages with:
- Holding a pencil
- Printing
- Typing
- Fastening zippers, buttons and snaps
- Opening and closing containers
- Using scissors
- Holding/using utensils
- Picking up small objects
Results you can expect after therapy focusing on Fine Motor/Handwriting skills:
It is not uncommon for children to become frustrated and avoid fine motor tasks when these skills are difficult for them. If left untreated, this can quickly turn into behaviour and poor performance at school and home. However, an Occupational Therapist can assess and pinpoint the aspect of fine motor skills that needs improvement and can deliver a support plan and provide therapy to focus on these skills and indirectly improve a child’s independence.
