What are Visual Perceptual skills?
Visual perception is the capacity to interpret or give meaning to what is seen. This includes recognition, insight and interpretation of the higher levels of the Central Nervous System of what is seen. These skills include: spatial relations, figure ground, discrimination, memory, closure and form constancy.
Children who have delays are given activities and strategies to correct or compensate for these deficits.
All Occupational Therapists at the clinic are qualified to conduct this assessment and provide treatment for the deficits.
Therapy for Visual Perceptual skills can help children of all ages who:
- Have difficulty with spelling, reading and math
- Have trouble seeing things that are around them (eg. can’t find a paperclip in a junk drawer)
- Have difficulty seeing the difference between two things they are looking at
- Have difficulty remembering what they have seen and the sequence of events
- Have difficulty visualizing what a completed form would look like when only given a part of it
- Having difficulty identifying the same form in a different context
Results you can expect after therapy focusing on Visual Perceptual skills:
- Skill improvement of spelling, reading and/or math
- Identify objects more readily in their environment
- Identify the differences between two objects
- Improved recall of events and detail of what is seen
- Improved ability to visualize a whole form when only a part of the form is given (e.g. puzzles)
- Can identify that a form seen in one context is the same in another
