What is a Developmental Assessment?
For children ages 2-18
This assessment is for children who may not be developing or reaching their expected milestones. They could be struggling to cope or having difficulty managing some skills that come much easier to others. The assessment will provide a developmental level of functioning or an approximate age equivalency to inform communication and problem solving, appropriate social stimulation, such as purchases of toys, games and books, and provide caregivers with supports to further engage their child.
This assessment is most frequently requested by a caregiver who is concerned about developmental milestones, if a child has been born prematurely, with medical complications, or who is at risk for delays.
This assessment may also be completed to support a youth or adult in their application to the Developmental Services Ontario (DSO), following a history of developmental supports and requirement of funding or services for continued support.
Cognitive assessment only: This may be requested to compliment achievement testing by a school. Treatment recommendations are not being sought. Charge for a cognitive assessment of IQ is at an hourly rate.
How does the Assessment work?
Each of the in-clinic portions last 2-3 hours at the office. We recommend you bring a small snack and water bottle for your child.
This also includes a standardized online questionnaire and a virtual meeting with the Psychologist.
Following this, a report of the findings and recommendations will be shared with the legal guardian/client. Copies of the report can be shared with third parties with consent, as requested.
What to do in order to prepare for the Assessment:
It is recommended to talk to your child in order to help them understand and prepare for the assessment.
Here is one way to go about explaining the assessment:
“This is a time to better understand how you learn, how you best interact with others, and how to work on feelings and behaviours that sometimes get in the way of being our best selves. Your job is just to do your best with [Psychologist’s Name], and if something is tricky, let [Psychologist’s Name] know so you can work together to figure out why!”
By using your child’s language (“we want to help you so listening/math/karate isn’t so boring”; “we want to work to help you with your big emotions”) you affirm for them that their problem is important and we want to help them with it.
Not quite sure what assessment is appropriate for your child or you have multiple concerns for your child? We can schedule you a Consultation with our Psychologist to discuss the current concerns and look at appropriate assessments and resources for your child.
