What are Sensory Processing Skills?
Sensory processing is how our brains receive, organize and understand information (sensory stimulation) from the environment.
This processing makes us aware of what is going on both around our body (external input) and from within our body (internal input). In order for children to go about their daily activities, they need to integrate all the sensory input they are receiving from outside and inside their body so they can be successful.
Therapy for Sensory Processing skills can help children of all ages with:
- Meaningful engagement in the school curriculum
- Participation in activities of daily living at home and social settings
- Regulation after school and minimize meltdown behaviours
- Socializing with peers
- Restorative sleep
Therapy for Sensory Processing issues (remove intervention)
Sensory processing intervention can support children and youth to engage in meaningful participation in home life and the school curriculum. Caregiver coaching relating to sensory processing, can help you to understand your child in a deeper, non-judgement way. Children want to do well and do not set out to behave badly. Challenging behaviours can stem from dysregulated states. When children are regulated, we can expect calmer transitions, ease of flow in routines, greater joy in leisure and social activities, academic growth in the classroom, and beyond.
