What is a Psycho-Educational Assessment?
For children ages 8 +
A psycho-educational assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to understand a child’s cognitive, academic, emotional, and behavioural functioning. It involves in-clinic standardized testing, observations, interviews with Parents/Caregivers and Teachers, and review of relevant records to gather information about the child’s strengths and challenges.
The psychologist will aim to identify any learning disabilities, developmental delays, attention deficits, or emotional disturbances that may impact the child’s ability to learn and succeed in academic settings.
Parents/Caregivers may request an assessment if recommended by the child’s school, or if they are concerned about the child’s current academic abilities.
How does the Assessment work?
The in-clinic portion will last 4-6 hours at the office. We recommend you bring a small snack and water bottle for your child. There will be a 1 hour lunch break.
The assessment also includes questionnaires to be completed by both the Parents/Caregivers and the child’s teacher. After completion of the assessment, there will be a virtual meeting with the Psychologist to discuss the results.
Following this, a report and recommendations will be shared with the legal guardian/client. Copies of the report can be shared with third parties with consent, as requested.
What to do in order to prepare for the Assessment:
It is recommended to talk to your child in order to help them understand and prepare for the assessment.
Here is one way to go about explaining the assessment:
“This is a time to better understand how you learn, how you best interact with others, and how to work on feelings and behaviours that sometimes get in the way of being our best selves. Your job is just to do your best with [Psychologist’s Name], and if something is tricky, let [Psychologist’s Name] know so you can work together to figure out why!”
By using your child’s language (“we want to help you so listening/math/karate isn’t so boring”; “we want to work to help you with your big emotions”) you affirm for them that their problem is important and we want to help them with it.
Not quite sure what assessment is appropriate for your child or you have multiple concerns for your child? We can schedule you a Consultation with our Psychologist to discuss the current concerns and look at appropriate assessments and resources for your child.
